Extracorporeal photopheresis (photopheresis, extracorporeal photochemotherapy, extracorporeal photoimmunotherapy) is a type of apheresis therapy. It can be defined as ultraviolet A irradiation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells that have interacted with psoralen. After its first use in cutaneous T-cell lymphomas, it has been widely used in the world. It is also used in graft versus host disease (GVHD), systemic sclerosis, solid organ transplant rejection and inflammatory bowel diseases that develop after allogeneic stem cell transplantation.
